Description
~ petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a PRIMO collector's cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has excellent contrasting lines, as well as an amazing pattern of ornately shaped holes lined with translucent quartz, agate, or (common) opal. The smallest are filled solid, while others penetrate clear through to the backside. They look like tiny geodes, complete with fancy fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material must be opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think? This cab has a rounded dome of 6mm, a bold designer 'spear' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back. I'm not often tempted to keep a stone, but this is one I will probably regret not holding on to!

Size: 63x29mm
Weight: approximately 55 carats
