Howardite cab ~
Offered here is an interesting cabochon of howardite (an unsual and rare form of opalized-silicated tuff), from northern Nevada. According to the miner, this material is all long gone now, and what little there is to be had comes at a very high premium, IF you can find any to buy. Sometimes called 'rattlesnake stone', it has delightful coloration and figure, reminding me of crazy venetian blinds or zippers, oddly enough. The darkest areas you see in the pic are actually highly translucent, giving the stone a nice quality of depth. There are several botryoidal voids adding to the visual interest, as well as a few tiny druzy spots beneath the surface. This cab has a low rounded dome, a designer 'flame' shape, and a slick glossy polish both front and back.
Size: 54x28mm
Weight: approximately 45 carats
