Description
~ petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a large, deluxe cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has great contrasting lines, as well as an amazing pattern of tiny holes, some of which are lined with translucent quartz, agate, or (common) opal, while almost all are filled. They look a lot like tiny thundereggs, and indeed, many of the filled holes show fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think? This showpiece cab has a nicely rounded dome of 6mm, a graceful designer 'flame' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 62x28mm
Weight: approximately 58 carats
