Description
~ petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is an interesting cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has great contrasting lines, as well as an amazing pattern of tiny holes, some of which are lined with translucent quartz, agate, or (common) opal; most are filled solid. They look like tiny thundereggs, and indeed, many of the holes show fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think? This cab has a rounded dome of 6mm, an elegant designer drop shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 47x30mm
Weight: approximately 38 carats
