petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is an interesting cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. This one was cut by Rain, because we all just HAD to! (Read more about this fascinating material on my blog.) The species has been IDed as sequoia, showing fine wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has great contrasting lines, and a scattering of tiny holes, some of which are lined with translucent quartz, agate, or (common) opal. The smallest holes are filled solid, while the largest holes show fortifications, with some being open through to the backside. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a rounded dome of 5.5mm, a graceful designer drop shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 49x21mm
