Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is an interesting cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has rich coloration in deeper hues, with contrasting lines, as well as an amazing pattern of tiny holes, some of which are lined with translucent quartz, bluish agate, or (common) opal; most of the smallest are filled solid, or almost so. They look like tiny thundereggs, and many show fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a rounded dome of 6mm, a versatile designer shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 45x19mm
