Binghamite cab ~
Offered here is a designer cabochon of ultra rare binghamite, from Minnesota. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, binghamite typically also displays a fine chatoyance. So much so, it's often refered to as 'the American pietersite'. Binghamite is all but extinct nowadays, and I hear even the old mine dumps and tailings have been thoroughly depleted long ago. This collectible cab is a fabulous example, featuring silky reddish bronze with undertones of magenta. Most of the dark areas are shiny metallic hematite, though the photos don't reveal their true nature. Please click to enlarge the photos for the most realistic views. The stone has a very high rounded dome of 8mm, a long symmetrical shield shape, and a sleek glassy polish both front and back. And my per carat price is a steal!
