Yttrium fluorite cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of yttrium fluorite, from Mexico. I got this exceptional rough several years ago at the Quartzite shows, and only recently re-found it hidden away in my stash. Sure cuts an impressive stone! It's purple fluorite combined with the rare earth element yttrium, and this splendid example is truly top notch. The lighter lavender areas have an unusual soft satiny sheen that's very pleasant but hard to describe, subtly shifting. The deepest purple band is a rich purple gel, and the entire stone is highly translucent, as illustrated by the backlit photo. Beautifully unique and collectible, you betcha! If you like purple stones for your creations, you'll love this one. The cab has a very high rounded dome of nearly 7mm, a gracefully curvy designer shape, and a smooth glossy polish both front and back.
*** Please note: Fluorite is only 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it scratches easily. In jewelry, fluorite needs a protected setting or it won't wear very well. This yttrium-combined fluorite seems a good deal harder and denser than the more ordinary common fluorite; it's similar in hardness to turquoise, which is about 5 to 5.5 or greater.
