Cacoxenite in quartz cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of quartz with inclusions of golden cacoxenite, a rarity cut from grand old Brazilian material. Technically, the inclusions are the mineral goethite, and I can truthfully tell you that those little spikes are the most amazing golden color I've ever seen in rock. Like spun gold. They really do look like little 'thorns', arranged in rows, and this gemmy example is quite densely packed. A very close look shows some tiny raspberry red stains scattered throughout the stone, which I'm told is lepidocrosite, a rare mineral in and of itself. The backlit photo reveals that the quartz is highly translucent; please click for a closer view of the details. There are a few of the typical 'fairy frost' inclusions present, but I don't find that to be overly distracting. The cab has a high and well-rounded dome of 7mm, a crisp designer 'parallelogram' shape, and a slick, glassy polish both front and back.
