Pigeon blood agate cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of pigeon blood agate, also known as cornelian, from Utah. This material is so named for its resemblance to splashes or droplets of ruby red pigeon's blood. This fine example is rather unusual because, along with the typical spots, it contains swirls and clouds of crimson on pastel purple that serve beautifully as the backdrop for the many tiny but brilliant bullseyes and dots. It also has a brecciated olive, in olive greens, of course, and a great degree of translucence, as illustrated by the backlit photo. The cab is cut with a rounded dome of 5mm, a sweet designer 'teardrop' shape, and a brilliantly glassy polish both front and back.
