Woodward Ranch plume agate cab ~
Offered here is a large collector's cabochon of Woodward Ranch plume agate, from Texas. Last I heard, the ranch was sold in March of 2014 and is currently closed to collecting, permanently. Whether or not that remains true, the official domain is, indeed, up for sale; I sure wish I'd have visited the ranch to find some agates during the many decades it was open. -sigh- This distinctive material is a classic favorite, prized for its wonderful translucence and colorful figure. (I LOVE red plumes, but this particular variety is my personal favorite, absolutely, in all the world! No other even comes close, IMHO.) Sure cuts a fascinating cab, I must say. This example, from my own private collection, has several ornate plumes in the most desireable crimson colors, tipped with black dendrites, ghostly fortifications surrounding many of them. The translucent background has nuanced shades of yellow, pink and gray. There's also an interesting white figure rising up through the stone, which was part of the very heart of the "biscuit", as these famous Texas nodules are called. Backlighting shows all the fascinating details, so please be sure to click to enlarge the view. The stone has a generously high rounded dome of 7mm, a plump designer 'flame' shape, and a super glossy polish both front and back. No flaws at all, that I can find, just one tiny crystalline pocket on the backside to note.
