Petrified palm root cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of petrified palm root, amazing gem material from Indonesia. This fossil wood is a fascinating piece of the earth's natural history. Here's an interesting detail: The fellow that found it believes that only the buried part of the palm tree was preserved to undergo the fossilization process, because none of the ancient trunks were found. I think it's absolutely gorgeous stuff! This example has a fabulous pattern of 'eyes' in rich, earthy shades of ochre-orange. Those are the actual petioles of the once-living palm tree that conveyed water to the green fronds above. They stand out beautifully against a creamy old ivory background, complete with every minute detail now faithfully preserved in stone. Very unique! No fossil collection is complete without a nice example of this amazing palm root! But it ought to make fabulous jewelry too. -smile- The cab has a rounded dome of 6mm, and a gracefully fluid designer teardrop shape, brilliantly polished both front and back.
