Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is a splendid cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This richly colored example has great contrasting grain, as well as an amazing pattern of pools & holes in wildly whimsical shapes, a few of which are open through to the backside. The holes are lined or filled with translucent agate or (common) opal, resembling tiny thundereggs, complete with fortifications. Some even appear to have tiny quartz crystals! Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details, especially the backlit pic. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a nicely rounded dome of 7mm, a crisp designer 'shield' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
