Rainbow cal silica cab ~
Offered here is a designer cabochon of rainbow cal silica, from Mexico. It is easy to see how it got the 'rainbow' moniker. Is it natural? Well, folks have produced documentation that this allophane material is naturally occuring rather than man-made, but I'm far from convinced... I've also heard there's a photo in circulation showing of a piece with a modern aluminum pop top embedded in it, though I haven't seen it. But regardless of its origin, they were certainly charging a LOT for rough in Tucson when I was last there! It is very popular stuff, and this eye catching stone is beautifully striped and amazingly colorful. It should be a delight to design some fun item of jewelry to best show it off. The cab has a nicely rounded dome of 5mm, and a glossy polish both front and back.
