Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has great contrasting lines, as well as an amazing pattern of tiny holes, lined with translucent quartz or (common) opal. They look a lot like tiny thundereggs, with no two exactly alike, even showing fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details, especially the backlit pic. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think? This showpiece cab has a nicely rounded dome of 6mm, a crisp designer 'spear' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 52x24mm
Weight: approximately 37 carats
