Royal eyes cabenite jasper cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of Cabenite, also called royal eyes jasper. It was found years ago around McDermitt, on the Nevada/Oregon border, in thunderegg form. The fellow who mined them was offering some small (& rather expensive) slabettes recently at the Madras gem show for the very first time. This example is the first one I cut, and though it shows only a few hints of the orbing habit this jasper can have, I think it's quite attractive. Reminds me a little of Bruneau jasper, and has a varied pattern of streamers and colors similar to those found in some Morrisonite and Willow Creek jaspers. I like how the jasper in this stone is so perfectly "married" to the contrasting reddish matrix, which was sound enough to take an excellent polish, just like the gemmy part. It is rumored that this unusual jasper will be featured in an upcoming issue of Rock & Gem magazine, and if so, we can all read more about it then. Meanwhile here's a nice cab for your jewelry designing and/or collecting pleasure! The stone has a well rounded dome of 5mm, and a gracefully curved designer teardrop shape that's highly polished front and back.
Size: 50x22mm
Weight: approximately 41 carats
