Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab suite ~
Offered here is a trio of cabochons, cut from an unsual & rare form of petrified wood from Hell's Canyon. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. These examples have beautifully contrasting lines, in shades of tan, beech and brown. The large stone also has an amazing pattern of tiny holes, some of which are lined with translucent quartz or (common) opal. They look a lot like tiny thundereggs, with no two exactly alike. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! The largest cab has a nicely rounded dome of 6mm, and a crisp designer 'spear' shape, while the smaller pair are each 5mm in thickness. All three have a slick glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 56x22mm, pair 22x10mm
Weight: approximately 53 carats total
