Opalite cab ~
Offered here is a unique cabochon of opalite, from the Brush-Wellman beryllium mine in Utah (now closed to any and all collecting). Sometimes known as bertrandite, Tiffany stone, ice cream opal, and even 'Purple Passion', no matter what you call it, it's certainly expressive stuff! I'm told this rare opalite gets its beautiful coloration from fluorite. My son Christopher cut this richly colored example, which has both light and dark shades of purple, with patches of yellow, gold, ochre, white & black. There are some metallic and sub metallic areas that are ever so very slightly raised, and a couple of teensy pits to be aware of, all quite typical of this material. The stone has a high rounded dome of 6mm, and a fine glossy polish both front and back.
Size: 42x26mm
Weight: approximately 51 carats
