Fischer stone cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of vintage Fischer stone, so named for George W. Fischer, who, in 1965, accidentally discovered a method of inducing dendrites to form in agate. His electrochemical displacement process was begun by soaking natural snakeskin agate slab in a solution, such as copper nitrate, which gave it a lovely blue-green coloration. The slab was removed from the solution, and a small piece of iron was then placed upon the still-damp agate, causing a displacement of the copper in the copper nitrate, which seeped down into the microscopic pores of the stone. That resulted in a beautiful dendrite, like the one in this example. The pleasing aqua color reminds me a little of chrysoprase, extra gemmy. It's awesome to see any stone with such a large flowery dendrite, very much like those seen in the finest Montana agates. Anyway, these old Fischer stones are rather scarce these days, a novelty sought after by collectors. This one's a dandy!! It has a high rounded dome of 7mm, a neat designer 'crescent' shape, and a great glassy polish front and back.
Size: 36x21mm
Weight: approximately 39 carats
