Ammonite cab ~
Offered here is a large deluxe cabochon cut from a fossil ammonite, from Madagascar. The species is Cleoniceras madagascariense, and I'm told it lived hundreds of millions of years ago. This olive green and golden amber colored cab has a strong suture pattern of growth events which can be seen as white lines, roughly resembling the shape of oak leaves. Those interlocking sutures are thought to have allowed the living ammonite to withstand the immense pressure of the underwater depths. The amber areas in this example are translucent, reminiscent of marmalade jelly, while the greenish areas are opaque. Oddly enough, I find the contrast between the two surfaces (& colors) to be quite attractive. I feel certain it'll make a truly exciting item of jewelry! The cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a versatile designer 'almond' shape, and a glossy polish both front and back.
