Description
~ Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a fascinating cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has outstanding contrasting bands, each representing a year, in dark brown against a background of rich sandalwood shades. It also has a scattering of tiny holes lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal; nearly all are filled solid. They look like tiny geodes, complete with fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Much moreso than these photos could ever illustrate. This cab has a rounded dome of 5.5mm, a crisp designer 'spear' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 52x26mm
