Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is an extraordinary collector's cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a zig-zagging herringbone pattern. This example has an amazing grain pattern, riddled with ornately shaped agate pools & holes, each of which is lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal. They resemble tiny embedded thundereggs, each one with its own unique shape, showing fancy fortifications. Several of the larger holes penetrate clear through to the backside. It is positively STUNNING backlit! And I'm fairly sure there is some super tiny crystal growth inside the tubes. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me a little of howardite, what do you think? This showpiece cab has a well rounded dome of 6+mm, a curvy designer 'flame' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
