Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is a large, deluxe collector's cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has rich coloration in diagonal bands, outstanding grain, as well as an amazing pattern of elongated agate pools & holes, some of which are open clear through to the backside. The holes are lined with translucent agate or (common) opal, resembling tiny thundereggs, complete with fortifications. Some even appear to have tiny quartz crystals! Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a nicely rounded dome of 6mm, a whimsical designer 'flame' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
