Crown of Silver Psilomelane cab ~
Offered here is a truly remarkable collector's cabochon of Crown Silver psilomelane, from Chihuahua, Mexico. This classic material is sometimes referred to as 'black malachite', though there's no real relationship. This beautiful example was cut from some very old wide-band stock that I'm partial to, something seldom seen these days. It features the classic bullseyes in sub-metallic black and shiny silver (pyrolusite), along with some neat patches of dark red that looks to be a jasper/agate blend. The largest reddish area has a shallow depression that contains tiny botryoidal bubbles that are slightly sparkly, adding much to the stone's visual impact and rarity. The stone is very highly reflective, like a black mirror, making photography quite challenging. That's due to the fact that a camera doesn't *see* the same way our human eyes do. These photos are the best representation I could achieve; in hand it's darker, overall. This cab has an asymmetrical 'chevron' shape, a high rounded dome of 7.5mm, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 34x29mm
