Description
~ Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a remarkable collector's cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing a fascinating herringbone pattern. Great contrasting lines, each representing a year's seasonal growth in the once-living tree. It also has an awesome pattern of voids pentrating clear through the stone, each lined with translucent milky or clear agate, or (common) opal. They resemble tiny geodes, complete with fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details, especially the backlit pic, which shows the astounding pattern of holes of this cab. It's truly amazing! I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a crisp designer 'spear' shape that's carved into a graceful arc at one end, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 62x27mm
Weight: approximately 58 carats
