Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is a fascinating cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating annual growth lines in a wavy herringbone pattern. This example has rich coloration in sandalwood & deeper smoky brown shades, with strongly contrasting lines, as well as an amazing pattern of tiny holes penetrating through to the backside. Those voids are lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal, and they appear to have super tiny druzy crystals. They look like tiny fortified geodes, and each one has its own unique shape. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a plume designer teardrop shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
