Ammonite cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon cut from a fossil ammonite, from Madagascar. The species is Cleoniceras madagascariense, and I'm told it lived hundreds of millions of years ago. This stone is golden amber with olive green, and shows a fascinating suture pattern of growth events which can be seen as white lines, many of which resemble the shape of oak leaves. Those interlocking sutures are thought to have allowed the living ammonite to withstand the immense pressure of the underwater depths. Translucent when backlit. It's a groovy stone, despite being cut rather thin at the edges. It will be tough to wire-wrap this example, but could be easily bezel set with a little extra care. Bear in mind that the un-polished backside has four sparkling druzy cavities. No doubt it'll make a fascinating piece of jewelry in the right hands. The cab has a rounded dome of 5mm, and a slick glossy polish on the front side only.
