Cacoxenite in amethyst cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of amethyst with inclusions of golden cacoxenite, a rarity cut from grand old Brazilian material by my son Chris. Technically, the inclusions are the mineral goethite, and I can truthfully tell you that those little spikes are the most amazingly bright golden color I've ever seen in rock! The tiny thorns are like spun gold, arranged in jagged rows. The backlit photo reveals that the translucent purple quartz has some attractive zoning, and some bits of reddish-pink lepidocrosite. There are several areas of the typical 'fairy frost' inclusions present, quite a bit, but the kid's pretty pleased with this cab in spite of it's imperfections. The cab has a well rounded dome of 5mm, and a brilliantly glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 45x27mm
Weight: approximately 53 carats
