petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is a LARGE cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my blog.) It is said to be sequoia, showing a fascinating herringbone pattern, cut to make it resemble a deep V chevron. Great contrasting lines, each representing a year's seasonal growth in the once-living tree. It also has various sized holes going roughly down the center, lined with translucent milky or clear agate, or (common) opal. Only the smallest holes are filled solid, while the others penetrate through to the backside. They look a lot like tiny geodes, complete with fortifications, in an assortment of whimsical shapes. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This substantial cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a crisp designer 'spear' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 51x30mm
Weight: approximately 48 carats
