Description
~ Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a fascinating cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has outstanding contrasting bands, each representing a year, in rich sandalwood shades. It also has an amazing pattern of tiny holes lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal; all but the largest are filled solid. They look like tiny geodes, complete with fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Much moreso than these photos could ever illustrate. This cab has a rounded dome of 6mm, a bolde designer 'spearhead' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 61x19mm
Weight: approximately 36 carats
