Description
~ Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a fascinating cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example sports an amazing pattern including extra fancy large druzy-lined holes with what appears to be a blend of translucent quartz & milky agate. Or perhaps it is (common) opal. They remind me of thundereggs, right down to the intricate fortifications. The colors are sandalwood & beech shades with ivory white, and darker woodgrain. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Much moreso than these photos could ever illustrate. This cab has a rounded dome of 7mm, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 47x21mm
Weight: approximately 39 carats
