Howardite cab ~
Offered here is an interesting cabochon of howardite (an unsual and rare form of opalized-silicated tuff), from northern Nevada. According to the miner, this material was all dug out long ago, and what little there is to be had comes at a very high premium, IF you can find any to buy. Sometimes called 'rattlesnake stone', it has amazing honeycomb figure, reminding me of crazy zippers, oddly enough. The darkest areas you see in the pic are actually highly translucent, giving the stone a nice quality of depth. This cab has a rounded dome of 5mm, a designer 'paisley' shape, and a slick glossy polish both front and back.
Size: 41x14mm
Weight: approximately 17 carats
