Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is an interesting cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a WILD herringbone pattern. This example has rich coloration, with deeper hues at one end, lighter toward the tip, creamier butternut flavored at the other end. There are only a few penetrating holes here, lined with translucent gray and white agate, or (common) opal; two larger ones & most of the smallest holes are filled solid, or almost so, still transmitting light nicely. They look just like tiny embedded thundereggs, including fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a rounded dome of 6mm, a designer 'catseye' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
