Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is an interesting cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. This beauty was cut by Rain, because we all just HAD to try it! (Read more about this fascinating material on my blog.) The species has been IDed as sequoia, showing fine wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This rich butternut hued example has great contrasting lines, and a scattering of penetrating holes going straight through to the backside, some of which are lined with translucent quartz, agate, or (common) opal. Even the smaller filled holes show fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a rounded dome of 6mm, a graceful designer 'flame' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
