Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is an interesting cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon on the Idaho/Oregon border. According to Tony Schultz, the nice fellow who sold me this pet wood, an old rockhound made this fabulous find way back in the '50s in the bottom of the gorge. The dam was built shortly afterward, and now the location is underwater.
The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has great contrasting lines, as well as an amazing pattern of tiny holes, some of which are lined with translucent quartz, agate, or (common) opal, while most are filled. These vugs look a lot like tiny thundereggs, and indeed, many of the filled holes show fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think?
This cab has a nicely rounded dome of 6mm, a crisp designer 'spear' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 42x27mm
Weight: approximately 41 carats
