Opalite cab ~
Offered here is a unique cabochon of opalite, from the Brush-Wellman beryllium mine in Utah (now closed to any and all collecting). Sometimes known as bertrandite, Tiffany stone, ice cream opal, and even 'Purple Passion', no matter what you call it, it's certainly expressive stuff! I'm told this rare opalite gets its beautiful purple coloration from fluorite. This example has a delightful pattern of deep purple veins plus some in bluish agate that are somewhat translucent, contrasting stongly on a snow white background. There are a few interesting voids present, including one large botryoidal vug with some sparkle, adding extra character. It has a low rounded dome of 5mm, a crisp designer 'diamond' shape, and a fine glossy polish both front and back.
Size: 43x37mm
Weight: approximately 47 carats
