Opal cab ~
Offered here is a gorgeous designer cabochon of fiery created opal. This opal is laboratory grown. The process is an expensive and time consuming one that can take up to two years to complete, and remains a closely guarded secret. The opal is actually grown from natural opal-bearing earths, or so I hear. Totally AWESOME stuff, crack free and virtually 100% pleasure to work with. The best part is, it's affordable, unlike a lot of mined opal. This example is black-based, making the brilliant rainbow flashes of fire stand out all the more. There's not a dead spot anywhere, and it exhibits the same sort of fascinating color shift seen in opal dug from the ground. There's tiny pinfire down the sides, and broad flashing bands across the top center. The photos were taken in less light than I normally use, to illustrate the stone properly. As good as it looks in these illustrations, it's even more outrageous in person! The cab has a low rounded dome (don't worry, it's not fragile!), a crisp designer 'spear' shape, and a glistening polish both front and back.
