Nipomo marcasite agate cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of rare Nipomo marcasite in agate, from that famous location in Central California. Years ago, I was told the bean fields where this great old material was once collected now has condos built all over it, so that's it, folks. End of collecting. This example has translucent agate between brilliantly shiny metallic 'chromed islands' of marcasite. Plumes, actually, with oodles of gleam! Each group of 'islands' has an edging of fuzzy blue-gray agate too, which is rather unusual, adding an extra dollop of character. Nipomo marcasite is an extremely challenging material to photograph because it's so highly reflective. I didn't do real well on these pics but the one with direct lighting ought to be enough to give you the idea; it's ridiculously shiny in hand, and far more beautiful! The cab has a rounded dome of 5mm, a bold designer shape, and a bright gleaming polish both front and back.
