Nipomo marcasite cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of rare Nipomo marcasite in agate, from that famous location in Central California. The area where this legendary material was once collected is no longer accessible, so it has become mighty tough to come by these days, particularly in this calibre. This one's a splendid example (certainly nicer than my poor photos!), featuring shiny metallic 'chromed islands' of bright marcasite suspended in a background of pale blue and yellow translucent agate. Oodles of gleam here! Nipomo marcasite is an extremely challenging material to photograph, because it's as brilliantly reflective as a mirror; these photos were necessarily taken with reflected light, while the last pic shows it backlit. This stone has a low rounded dome, and a pleasant heft in the hand that will probably surprise you. It's cut in a sleek shape that works nicely for showing off this stone's exceptional figure, and it has a slick, shiny polish both front and back.
