Dinosaur bone cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of fossilized dinosaur bone, from Utah. This highly silicated material is many millions of years old, a marvelous example of the natural preservation of our earth's ancient, extinct 'thunder lizards'. Over millennia, the cells in this fossil bone have been completely replaced with muted shades of bluish purple agate. The cells are framed by a web of the actual cell walls, now maroon and brown in color, forever frozen in time. There are some neat 'cores' within most of the cells, making them look like tiny fortified agates, which they are! The stone is also surprisingly translucent, despite its thickness; please click the pics to view the closer shots. The cab has a well rounded dome of 6+mm, a bold designer shape, and despite some threads of softer calcite, it took an excellent polish both front and back.
