Royal Sahara jasper cab ~
Offered here is a splendid cabochon of the new Royal Sahara jasper, recently found in the North African Sahara desert. This amazing porcelain material has so much going for it, it's hard to know where to begin to describe it... It's like the old Deschutes jasper, and like Biggs jasper as well, with even more exotic patterns. This example has ribbons of rich brown and creamy tan, smoky sand and even blue gray. Chris says this type of pattern reminds him of a cave, or the view down a mineshaft, with light reflecting off the walls. Collectors and jewelry designers alike will find plenty to appreciate in RSJ, no doubt! The cab has a well rounded dome of 7mm, and a fun, freeform shape that contains the remarkable pattern well. Like all the more familiar porcelain jaspers, this stone is very hard, so it took a great glassy polish both front and back.
