Offered here is a large designer cabochon of hypersthene, from Quebec, Canada. This iron pyroxene mineral has bands of flash that are mighty difficult to capture in photos, but hopefully these pics will give you the idea. I'm told that the crystal twinning in this material is responsible for its showy refractions, the astonishing look of which reminds me of an impossible cross between moonstone and tigereye. The bands shift and change with movement of the stone, in a cool pearly gray color with subtle undertones in an odd purplish cast. A close look reveals an interesting moire pattern, much like fingerprints. Wild, huh? This example has a low rounded dome of 5mm, a crisp geometric shape, and despite a slightly waving surface, it has a glossy polish both front and back.
