Snake eyes agate cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of 'snake eyes agate', strange new stuff from Mexico. I don't rightly know if there's such a thing as oolitic agate, but I do believe the tightly packed little eyes (or eggs?) in this material are properly called oolites. The nearly clear gel-like background in which they float is definitely agate, but I've never seen anything quite like this, have you? The agate is clear enough to see into, revealing the orbs inside, for a dramatic three dimensional effect. It includes a couple small fortifications too. Several of the eyes have darker centers, and as you can see in the photos, those exposed at the surface really do look a lot like eyes. Strange stuff, indeed, but mighty cool! The cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a bold designer shape, and despite a wee bit of subtle waviness, it took a nice bright polish both front and back.
