Snake eyes agate cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of snake eyes agate, strange new stuff from Mexico. I don't rightly know if there's such a thing as oolitic agate, but I do believe the tightly packed little eyes (or eggs?) in this material are properly called oolites. The gel-like background in which they float is definitely agate, but I've never seen anything quite like this, have you? The agate is clear enough to see down into, revealing more orbs inside, for a fascinating three dimensional effect. Some of the pinkish white orbs have fortification banding, and those exposed at the surface do bear a resemblance to eyes. Strange stuff, indeed, but mighty cool! The cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a bold designer shape, and despite a wee bit of subtle waviness and matte finish, it took a decent polish both front and back.
